Salmon or Sewin
Salmon or Sea Trout (Sewin)
It is an offence to take a Salmon from the Teifi before the 16th of June. The TTA would hate to see any angler being prosecuted, particularly if the reason was due to being unable to differentiate between a Salmon or a big Sewin. If you do have any doubt then you must return the fish. We hope the following information will be helpful to you in the future.
Identifying characteristics of the Salmon
Tail fin
Wrist of tail
When extended, Salmon have a concave tail
Markings
Salmon have few spots below the lateral line
Wrist of tail
Salmon have a narrow wrist with distinct broadening on the tail side of the wrist
Mouth
The jaw of the Salmon extends no further than the rear edge of the eye

Tail fin
When extended, Sewin have a convex tail
Markings
Sewin have numerous dark spots even below the lateral line
Wrist of tail
Sewin have a relatively broad wrist
Mouth
The upper jaw of the Sewin extends beyond the rear edge of the eye.
